As with other MMORPGs, players control a character avatar within a game world in third- or first-person view, exploring the landscape, fighting various monsters, completing quests, and interacting with non-player characters (NPCs) or other players. Also similar to other MMORPGs, World of Warcraft requires the player to pay for a subscription, either by buying prepaid game cards for a selected amount of playing time, or by using a credit or debit card to pay on a regular basis.[21]

To enter the game, the player must select a realm�sometimes referred to as a server. Each realm acts as an individual copy of the game world, and falls into one of four categories. Roleplay (RP) and roleplay-PvP (RP-PVP) variants of both primary realm types are also available. Realms are also categorized by language, with in-game support in the language available.[22] Players can make new characters on all realms, and it is also possible to move already established characters between realms for a fee.[23]

To create a new character, in keeping with the storyline of previous Warcraft series games, players must choose between the opposing factions of Alliance or Horde. Characters from the opposing factions can perform rudimentary communication, but only members of the same faction can speak, mail, group, and share guilds. The player selects the new character's race, such as Orcs or Trolls for the Horde or Humans or Dwarves for the Alliance.[24] Players must also select the class for the character, with choices such as mages, warriors and priests available.[25] All classes, except for special "Hero classes", are limited to particular races.

World Of Warcraft - Wrath Of The Lich King

Northrend is a crescent-shaped continent in northern Azeroth.[8] The continent is roughly half the size of the Eastern Kingdoms, but matches Outland in length and width. Although Northrend is known for its snow and ice, developers stated that only parts of the continent were to be frozen over.[9] Northrend features eight zones with content for levels beginning at 68, though players may travel to Northrend at any level.[10] Players arrive by boat (Alliance) or zeppelin (Horde) either at the Howling Fjord or the Borean Tundra zones, located at opposite ends of the continent. Howling Fjord is home to evil half-giants called the Vrykul who reside in Utgarde Keep, the first dungeon to be described in the expansion. The Dragonblight and Grizzly Hills zones are located in the central-south and south-east parts of the continent respectively. The ursine Furbolgs reside in the forested Grizzly Hills. Dragonblight features the gravesites of dragons who came to the region to die.[11] Wintergrasp is the first completely player versus player (PvP) zone in World of Warcraft, even on player versus environment (PvE) servers.[12]

The Forsaken and their Queen, Sylvanas Windrunner, have also arrived with a new contagion that they hope will prove to be effective against the undead minions of the Lich King. The Forsaken are seeking vengeance for being subjected to Arthas' magic. They have set up a military base of operations called "Vengeance Landing" and have created a settlement called "New Agamand", both in the Howling Fjord.

The magi of Dalaran have also relocated, along with their city, to Northrend in order to deal with the rising threat of the Blue Dragonflight, led by Malygos the Spell-Weaver, and the Lich King. The city of Dalaran functions as the neutral sanctuary city for the continent, analogous to Shattrath City in Outland. Dalaran is levitating at a great height above the Crystalsong Forest zone but can be accessed by either the ground or by flying mount.[11] The expansion also features more creatures and other enemies, such as the 4 new spirit beasts: Loque'nahak, Gondria, Skoll and Arcturis. It also introduces the vicous dragons called Proto-Dragons [dragons with short arms, huge teeth and large wings], and the gigantic dinosaur King Krush, who stalks the jungles of Sholazar Basin, and is a true challenge for players to catch or defeat, and his hide is green.

According to Blizzard game designers, Arthas Menethil and Ner'zhul, combined as the titular Lich King, are the main focus of the entire expansion.

In February of 2010, in an Activision Blizzard investor call, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime revealed that Cataclysm would be released in that same calendar year.[3]

On May 3, 2010, it was officially confirmed that the Family & Friends Alpha phase of the testing process for Cataclysm had begun,[4] fueling further speculation that the open alpha would commence within the coming months. Despite the non-disclosure agreement (NDA), much of the beginnings of the game were leaked onto various sources after the client was distributed across the internet within a few days of the alpha testing phase commencing. On May 11, 2010, it emerged that Blizzard had requested that at least one of these sites remove any alpha content[5] until the NDA was lifted.

On June 30, 2010, Cataclysm entered closed beta testing, sending invitations to gamers who had signed up through their account. Reporting their first quarter financial earnings in a webcast, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has all but confirmed that latest World of Warcraft expansion, Cataclysm, will be out on store shelves by the end of the year.

In August 2010, Blizzard announced the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Collector's Edition. Cataclysm was already said to be on track for release in the latter part of 2010 prior to this report;[6] in addition, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime went on record saying, "Although an exact release date has not yet been announced, we are on track to launch the expansion by the end of the year. As with all Blizzard games though, we won't release until it's ready."[7]

On September 7th (8th in Europe), the first pre-Cataclysm quest chains were released to live servers, and a few days later, Patch 4.0.1 was released to public test realms, indicating that a release date might be in the not too distant future.[8][9]

On September 30th, news site MMO-Champion estimated that the game had a target release date of December 7, 2010 based on data-mining which revealed the start of the next arena season. [10] GameSpot reported that customers who had pre-ordered the Collector's Edition of the game were sent notifications that they now estimate the arrival date will be between January 4 to January 18, 2011.[11] Shortly after other websites such as Kotaku were emailed copies of the notifications sent to Amazon customers and posted it on their website marking the release date as January 5, 2011[12] for the past two expansions overestimated the game's release date in order to give their sales a safety buffer.

On October 4, 2010, at the peak of speculation surrounding its release date, Blizzard officially announced the release of Cataclysm for December 7, 2010.[1] The expansion will be available as Standard Edition, Collectors Edition and as a new digital download from the Blizzard Online Store. The digital version of the game has been made available for pre-purchase through, and gives gamers the opportunity to play the new expansion pack the moment the servers go live (at 12:01am PST, December 7).[13]

The central plot of the expansion is the return of the evil dragon aspect Deathwing the Destroyer. Last seen in Warcraft II, Deathwing has spent that time licking his wounds, so to speak, and plotting his fiery return from the elemental plane of Deepholm. His return tears through the dimensional barrier within Azeroth, causing a sweeping cataclysm that reshapes much of the world's surface. In the midst of the world-wide disaster comes renewed conflict between the Alliance and the Horde, which is now under the rule of the hot-tempered warrior Garrosh Hellscream.
[edit] Environmental Redesign

One of the primary features of Cataclysm is the redesign of the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor areas introduced with the launch of World of Warcraft in 2004.

Major changes are being brought to these zones, making it so each faction has a fair, and overall easier leveling flow, by replacing the old quests with newer ones, to incorporate updated gameplay and mechanics that have been introduced since the game's release.

Along with the redesign of each zone, each race will have its own respective starting area, where players will do a series of quests in a chain that will bring them up to level 5-6, before sending them out of the small area, and into the rest of the world.

Each zone will also have its own storyline, through a series of quests, as to keep the player interested in doing said quests. Each of the zones that are faction specific, however, will cater only to those of the faction that controls that zone. Neutral, or 'contested' zones, will feature a PvP (Player-Versus-Player) based quest line, making the player compete against the opposing faction (Horde against Alliance, and vice versa) to achieve the desired goal of their faction. This feature is expected to make heavy usage of phasing.
